SA Attends the Student Diversity Leadership Conference
By: LaVern Burton, Director of Equity, Inclusion, and Service Learning
Every year, Sewickley Academy sends four to six students, who are passionate about equity and inclusion work, to the National Student Diversity Leadership Conference.
This conference is an amazing opportunity for our students to meet high school students from across the United States. Students who have attended in the past, interview and select students who will attend the following year.
Our student attendees this year were Caroline Cox, Morgan Martin, Suchita Rajan, Luke Tyson, Andy Long, and Mira Bhatia. From November 29-December 2, 2017, our students learned to navigate difficult conversations as well as focus on cultural competency and facilitation skills. This year, the long-standing thirty-year conference was held in Anaheim, California. Our group met 1,600 students from independent schools across the country and gained student leadership and community building skills. The positive energy they brought back to the Academy will continue to add to our school spirit.
Their experiences and the people that they have met will be remembered forever!
