Gearing Up Ségou West Africa

As the 64th Annual Clothesline Sale comes to an end, you may wonder what our community does with all their finds and deals from the sale. One member of the Sewickley Academy community teamed up with the Clothesline Sale Committee to provide clothes overseas to better the lives of those that are less fortunate and do not have the resources we have here at SA.

Basketball coach Almamy Thiero, aka "Coach Al," gives back to his hometown in the Ségou Region of Mali, West Africa. Home and School’s Clothesline Sale team helped Al and his family send 10 50-gallon barrels filled with clothes and shoes for men, women, and children, as well as athletic shoes, basketballs, and soccer balls, to Ségou. Shipping costs are about $300 a barrel, and the committee helped to offset these costs. “I’m grateful for the Clothesline Sale and all it does for our community and in particular my community in Ségou, West Africa,” Al said. “Laura [(Aufman ’88) Jenkins] and her team helped our cause, Gears Up Ségou West Africa, for the past three years.”

The youth of Ségou face numerous challenges, including intense poverty, malnutrition, limited access to water and electricity, low literacy rates, and one of the world’s highest infant mortality rates. Al and his family hope their donations can assistant those in need.

“We are proud of Al and his determination to bring the sense of community at Sewickley Academy internationally,” Laura, Clothesline Chair, said.
