Sewickley Academy is dedicated to being a community that represents and celebrates different backgrounds, talents, interests, and divergent yet informed opinions.

Our goal is to elevate an inclusive community that allows all to feel welcomed. We firmly insist that every person is an important member of our community and that their voices should be shared.

We are intentional about creating systems and safe spaces that make this happen for our students, faculty, and parents. Inclusive curriculum, diverse clubs, student led opt-in series, and S.E.E.D. cohort groups for students, faculty, and staff create positive protocols for difficult conversations.

  • The Opt-In Series

    Sewickley Academy students from the Student Diversity Leadership Club (SDLC) engage and lead a series of conversations about local and national events pertaining to cultural identities. SDLC members are trained to facilitate these conversations pertaining to race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, ability, religion, age, and socio-economic class. The desired outcome is to share personal perspectives and listen to different lenses within our diverse community. Through the opt-in series, students are offered a platform to listen to one another, weigh in with “ fishbowl” or “four corner activities” and comments so that everyone is heard.
  • Seeking Educational Equity Through Diversity (S.E.E.D.)

    Sewickley Academy has participated in a campus wide initiative to elevate cultural competency using a proven curricular tool called S.E.E.D. We have established small cohort groups for students, faculty and staff, and parents.

    Our mission is to use S.E.E.D. to build common language, share best practices, and engage in collegial conversations about difficult topics pertaining to age, ethnicity, race, ability, religion, and socio-economic class by engaging the entire community. 

    We adhere to the perimeters set by the S.E.E.D organization during group sessions by keeping to specific timing for each topics, exchanging facilitator notes, and making sure we partner share, cross share, journal, circle share, and close each session by asking participants to share in one word how they felt. Lastly, we plan using the five step process. It’s working! We have received tremendous support and results. 

    Leaders and future facilitators are in position to take complex conversations to the next level with confidence using S.E.E.D.
