Board of Trustees Welcomes New Chair and Vice Chair

Over the summer, Sewickley Academy’s Board of Trustees transitioned leadership roles. As Amy (Simmons ’80) Sebastian’s term ended, Kate (Poppenberg ’82) Pigman was elected Chair of the Board, and Brad Busatto ’88 was elected Vice Chair.

Kate and Brad both have strong ties to the Sewickley Academy community as alumni and parents. Kate’s daughter, Emma, is a junior. Brad has two daughters – Kate, who graduated in 2016, and Brooke, who is in Grade 5.

For Kate, Sewickley Academy means opportunity. “As an alumna, parent, and trustee, I continue to be proud of the education and preparation we afford the students who attend the Academy. I believe the diversity of students; the participative and encouraging environment in classrooms; and the options to take on a language, activity, or sport prepares and develops our students to be collaborative and confident in their abilities as they get ready for college and work,” she said.

Brad agreed, as his Academy roots also run deep. “Sewickley Academy feels like a second home to me. Watching generations of families come to campus, including my own, brings me happiness,” he said. “As an alumnus, I have always admired and enjoyed the blend of Sewickley Academy’s rich history, and its ability to stay on the forefront of education. It is easy to focus on the excitement of today and enjoy the nostalgia of yesterday.”

Kate and Brad both bring their experience in business to the Board, as Kate works for PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and is the Global Human Capital Leader for PwC IT and Brad is co-owner of Industry Terminal & Salvage. As members of the Board’s Executive Committee, they plan to work with the community to make Sewickley Academy the best it can be.

“The Academy faces the same demographic challenges and opportunities as the other private and public schools in our region,” Brad explained. “As we transition from Generation X to the Millennial Generation, we will have to identify and provide the experience, facilities, and curriculum desired to attract and sustain this new generation of families.”

Kate is excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. “I look forward to working with our Sewickley Academy community and driving a commitment to positive participation and generosity to continue the good health and growth of our school.”

Congratulations, Kate and Brad!
