Four Seniors Named as Semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation

Grace Armutat, Leon Jiao, Jayne Miner, and Maria Silvaggio were named Semifinalists in the 68th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The National Merit Scholarship Program recognized these four seniors from Sewickley Academy for their exceptional academic promise demonstrated by their outstanding performance on the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).
According to the National Merit website, each year approximately 50,000 academically talented high school students are honored in the National Merit Scholarship Program, and about 16,000 of them are named semifinalists. The semifinalists then “have an opportunity to advance to the Finalist level and compete for National Merit Scholarships. About 7,250 of the outstanding Finalists will be chosen as Merit Scholarship® winners in the 2023 competition.”

Scholarship finalists are determined through evaluation of academic record as well as school recommendations, student essay, extracurricular activities, and PSAT/NMSQT scores. Finalists will be notified in February 2023 and scholarship winners announced in the spring.
