Senior School Students Medal for Excellence in National Latin Exam

Freshman Leon Jiao earned a gold medal, sophomores Natasha Karlik, Sarah Cao, and Gary Peng were awarded silver medals, and freshman Spencer Krysinski and junior Joshua Kurian presented with Magna Cum Laude and Cum Laude certificates respectively in the National Latin Exam. All of these students were over the national average, with many more Latin II-IV students finishing just a few points short.

The National Latin Exam is an annual exam given by the American Classical League in the U.S. and around the world. It is not meant as a competition, but rather as an opportunity for students and teachers to recognize the effort and to celebrate the study of the Latin language, as well as Roman history and culture. Depending on the score, students get awards and certificates and may qualify for scholarships. The exam is a good way for students and teachers to see how they compare to peers, as well as to get a chance to challenge themselves concerning knowledge of the Latin language and Ancient Rome.

“Even though it is very nice to be able to recognize these impressive awards in particular, I am proud of all of my students and know they have worked hard all year,” Senior School Latin teacher Joel Svensson said.

Due to the pandemic, the students who placed in the competition will receive physical awards and certificates as soon as the American Classical League are able to send them.

Congratulations, Leon, Natasha, Sarah, Gary, Spencer, and Joshua!
