The Senior School Robotics Team Battled at the Southwestern PA FIRST Tech Challenge
By: Ben Spicer, Senior School Science and Robotics Teacher
Whoa!Bots, the Senior School Robotics team, competed in the Southwestern Pennsylvania First Tech Challenge on Saturday, January 11, 2020, nearly advancing to the Pennsylvania state championship.
After ranking fifth of twenty-four teams in qualification matches, the Whoa!Bots became the captain of the fourth seeded alliance in the semi-finals. They battled in close matches against the top-seeded alliance, but fell just short of advancing. Although that brings the FIRST Robotics season to a close, the Whoa!Bots have much to be proud of.
The competition required the students to design, build, and program a robot to manipulate game elements in collaboration with other teams from regional organizations. The Whoa!Bots constructed a robot that successfully collected and delivered stones to the building zone while strategically working with other teams to stack the stones. The reliability of their robot during autonomous parking and end game maneuvering proved to be an advantage in scoring. Participating in such events is an exercise in resilience for all those involved. The Whoa!Bots will return to the drawing board in preparation for the 2020-2021 season. They are grateful for the immense support and sincere encouragement from everyone in the community.
