Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a joyous time to remember those who have passed away. In Mexico, ancient Aztec traditions were combined with Christianity during the Spanish conquest. As a result, each year families construct colorful altars or ofrendas in their homes that essentially welcome the spirit of their loved ones on November 1st and 2nd.
On a beautiful afternoon at Allegheny Country Club, 24 golfers competed in a 18 hole format from four respected high school school programs in the 1st annual Sewickley Academy Invitational. The players played in a good pace, respected the golf course, their fellow competitors and the game of golf in the right manner, and shot some very good scores. We had three individuals from three different school tie for medalist with a one over par 71: Hunter Bruce, Peters Township; Cole Luther Sewickley Academy; and Scott Bitar from Fox Chapel.
The team scores were most competitive as only 12 strokes separated the field. Final Team Scores:
Fox Chapel 373 Sewickley Academy 374 Peters Township 380 Seneca Valley 385
From a Sewickley Academy perspective, it was fantastic to compete with such talented golfers. Our guys responded beautifully as our scores ranged from 71 to 80. Most importantly, every one of our guys showed resiliency after tough holes. This was our second major tournament of the young season, and it was another big success!
