The Sewickley Academy College Preparatory Middle School focuses on each child by creating a caring and understanding space to encourage physical growth, social/emotional maturity, and abstract thinking. Middle school years mark the transition from the dependence of childhood and the independence of young adulthood.
In the Middle School, students experience greater freedom and expanded options in an environment that is structured but flexible, where expectations are clearly set forth. Responsible citizenship is stressed, requiring respect for the feelings, opinions, and property of others and for the valued traditions of the school.
Wisdom and dedication coupled with an understanding of the unique social and emotional needs of pre-adolescents characterize our Middle School faculty. Teachers combine expertise, energy, empathy, guidance and a love of learning, often with a zany sense of humor, to teach Middle School students effectively.
Each student’s schedule in the Middle School has five course blocks, which meet five days in each eight-day cycle, plus separate periods for trimester art classes, physical education or sports, health class, lunch, an activity period, and skill building periods. There is also a period for the ensemble classes. Twice each day there is a ten-minute break that students use for going to their lockers, checking with teachers, and socializing. There is also time each morning for advising groups to meet. The schedule is nearly identical for all three grades, with only slight differences in Grade 6 for arts, health, PE, and skill building periods.
