The Senior School's athletic program stresses the development of personal excellence for our student-athletes. Our coaches work with individuals and teams to improve performance and promote character, leadership, and sportsmanship. Students at the varsity level are exposed to high level competition in both the regional Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League
(WPIAL) and in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association
(PIAA). Numerous individuals and teams qualify for post-season play seasonally. While capturing championships provides excitement and a sense of pride, it is the journey that leaves a lasting effect on our students. The discipline and the perseverance learned along the way, the ability to win or lose with grace and humility, and the teamwork and joy of competition are the traits that define what sports teach about life.
In addition to our outstanding coaching staff, Sewickley Academy students are offered the opportunity to further develop their skills by working with experts in the fields of mental and physical training. The Director of Mental Training at UPMC is on campus one day a week teaching our students and coaches how to enhance an athlete's sport experience. Students also have the opportunity to work with our certified physical trainer in the Fitness Center on a daily basis, which allows them to better reach their peak fitness potential.
Sewickley Academy's varsity teams are a combination of talented athletes, aspiring athletes, and friends who wish to share the journey of that season's path together. Playing time is based on who can best help the team succeed. Junior varsity coaches make every effort to play every student in each game, but there is no guarantee of equal playing time for every child. The WPIAL provides section schedules, and head coaches have significant input into non-league scheduling. Parents are a tremendous resource for our athletic teams and are avid supporters at games.
Senior School athletic teams include baseball, girls' and boys' basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, ice hockey, girls' and boys' lacrosse, girls' and boys' soccer, softball, swimming and diving, girls' and boys' tennis, and track and field.
