Assemblies & Activities

Two to three times a week, the Middle School has a morning meeting in the Commons. These meetings are designed to bring the whole Middle School together as a community to share information and to celebrate special events in the life of the Middle School. Student athletes announce upcoming sports events, soliciting fans for their next matches, and student council leaders share information about upcoming events, encouraging widespread participation and generosity. Students become confident in their public-speaking skills as they become comfortable addressing a group of 200 people.
Special assembly and activity periods showcase student musical or drama talents, may be a time for Homeroom Olympics or a wide variety of club meetings, or may feature an outside speaker of special interest. Presentations in the past have included The Alicia Project (internet safety), the Tuskegee Airmen, Black History speakers, Walking for Wishes, Children's Cancer research, and a Somali refugee speaker. Speakers are also invited to classrooms throughout the year.

Student Activities

The Middle School activities program enriches the academic program, offers opportunities for community and relationship building within and across the grades, and develops self esteem, cooperation, and a sense of belonging.
Activities in Middle School are consistent with the mission of the school and emphasize the Academy's core values - Character, Educational Vigor, Diversity, and Community. Student Council is an example of an activity that focuses on Character through student leadership expectations and Community through team-building and community service projects. Any student may run for office and competition is keen to gain a spot on the Council. MathCounts, open to all students, is a team-building activity that offers mathematics enrichment and competitive opportunities that demonstrate great Educational Vigor.
All student activities of the Middle School are designed to appeal to a broad range of interests and abilities. Below is a list of opportunities available to Middle School students:
