Coach Palmer began his teaching and coaching career at Stephen's School in Alexandria, Virginia as an English teacher and assistant football, basketball, and baseball coach in 1980. During his 36 years as a head varsity basketball coach, his teams have captured four Virginia State Championships, 1987, 1989, 1990 & 1995, and two Pennsylvania State Championships 2010 & 2017. The Panthers captured WPIAL Championships in 2004, 2009, and 2010. Mr. Palmer was selected by the Washington Post Coach of the Year in 1987 and 1995. In 2010 he was selected Coach of the Year in Pennsylvania as the Panthers earned Coach Palmer his 500th win during the State Championship game at Penn State. In 2017 he was once again selected Coach of the Year in Pennsylvania as the Panthers captured the State Championship in a thrilling overtime victory. In addition, the Pittsburgh Post Gazette selected him as Coach of the Year as he earned his 600th career victory. His teams have captured 18 regular season championships, and 22 of his teams have advanced to the state playoffs. More than sixty of his players have gone on to play college basketball at Davidson, Harvard, Yale, Cornell, Brown, Penn, Wake Forest, Rice, Bucknell, and a number of highly respected Division II & III universities and colleges.
