Four SA Students Win FIRST Tech Challenge Robotics World Championship
Four Sewickley Academy students competed in the FIRST Tech Challenge Robotics World Championship last week in Detroit, Michigan.
Senior James Walton, juniors Aydin Turkay and Jayvir Monga, and freshman Christina Walton competed as part of Team #8393 the Giant Diencephalic BrainSTEM robotics team and won first place in the FTC Robotics World Championship.
The BrainSTEM team played tough through the nine qualification matches from Wednesday, April 25, through Friday, April 27, and was picked by their division's first-place alliance captain – Brainstormers –heading into the divisional semifinals. Along with their third alliance partner – Two Bits and a Byte – the “Brain" alliance swept through the semifinals and finals undefeated to earn a spot in the overall championship match. The alliance faced three of the toughest opposition teams from the other FTC divisional final – Gluten Free, Mechanical Paradox^3, and LanBros. The final best of three championship match was held at Ford Field in Detroit with more than 40,000 people watching from the stands and online as the “Brain” alliance won the first two matches, securing their victory and first place in the world championship!
Congratulations to these dedicated students for this capstone achievement on their extracurricular robotics work. James has been participating in competitive robotics for seven years, Christina for six years, and Aydin and Jayvir for five years.
