Hockey Battles Undefeated Team PIHL Playoffs
Congratulations to the varsity ice hockey team for taking the undefeated #1 seed Bishop McCourt team to the wire in the PIHL Quarterfinals Thursday before falling 7 - 5. The Panthers jumped off to a 1 - 0 lead on a Tommy Gordon goal assisted by Andrew Beck. After two McCort goals put them up 2 - 1 going into the 2nd period, the Panthers scored three straight goals, two by Jack Duggan, one unassisted and one assisted by Matthew Hajdukiewicz, and a goal by Andrew Beck, assisted by Tommy Gordon. The Crushers closed out the period with 3 goals to take a 5 - 4 lead. Undeterred, SA scored the tying goal by Matthew Hajdukiewicz on an assist by Tommy Gordon. The Crushers were finally able to secure the victory late in the game with two goals for the final margin of 7 - 5. Congratulations to senior goalie Cole Luther who capped his SA hockey career with another superb effort in goal as noted by the Crushers' coach in a Tribune Democrat Johnstown newspaper article.
