Grade 5 Embraces the Holiday Spirit by Partnering with 412 Food Rescue to Prepare Meals

Grade 5 students embodied Sewickley Academy’s mission in working toward the greater good by partnering with 412 Food Rescue on Tuesday, December 19, to prepare meals that will be donated to The Center for Hope in Ambridge.

In social studies class, students learned that people are affected in many ways by population growth. One way that struck students in particular was the concept of hunger. They were surprised to learn that many in our own community experience food insecurity for a various number of reasons, and they wanted to know how they could help. 
 
Last month, students welcomed Hana Uman from 412 Food Rescue to speak about the nonprofit and the work it does in the Pittsburgh area. Christina Blazin, with the support of Hana and some amazing parent volunteers, planned a cooking day for students to prepare 15 meals that could be delivered to those in need this holiday season. The students followed recipes, measured, diced, and more to prepare this food. They practiced effective food safety and composted waste scraps along the way. 
 
The students were engaged and excited about this work and experienced the gratitude of giving as they made a difference for the local community.
