412 Food Rescue Teaches Grade 5 Students to Reduce Food Waste

Earlier this week, Grade 5 students and teachers welcomed Ms. Hana Uman from a local nonprofit organization called 412 Food Rescue.

Grade 5 teacher Mrs. Christina Blazin invited Ms. Uman to Sewickley Academy in response to a general discussion about population growth during a social studies class a few weeks ago. “Many students were surprised by the statistics about world hunger that we read about. Many asked what they could do to help. We discussed the [Academy's] Thanksgiving Food Drive (that is currently taking place), but I also began to investigate some ways that students could get involved in our area,” Mrs. Blazin stated. Ms. Uman spoke with the students about the work 412 Food Rescue does in western Pennsylvania and how students can reduce food waste on a daily basis.
