Grade 10 Student Honored for Excellence in Classics and Mythology
By: Madison Weaver, Communications and Media Intern
Sewickley Academy Grade 10 student Sarah Phillips won the American Classical League’s 18th Julia K. Petrino Memorial Book Award in honor of her excellence in and dedication to classics and mythology.
Sarah will receive the book prize and a $500 savings bond from the League.
Over the past seven years, Sarah has earned four gold medals and three silvers medals on the National Mythology Exam. Students who score highly on this exam are invited to submit an application outlining their interests in classics and mythology, as well as recommendations from the students’ teachers for awards and scholarships
Mr. Trevor Adams, who helped foster Sarah’s interest in classics through various projects and assignments, wrote a recommendation letter to support Sarah’s nomination for the award. Sarah’s father, Matthew Phillips, also credits Ms. Sesame Zamora for sparking Sarah’s interests and supporting her studies.
“Latin is a fascinating language, and knowing it can be helpful for a number of reasons, including learning other languages. Mythology interested me because it is a greatly important part of ancient cultures,” Sarah said. “I think the classics will stay with me, whether as part of study or just for fun.”
Sarah is very excited to have received the award, hoping it reflects her hard work and the support of the Academy. “I think the award reflects well upon the study of the classics at SA, including the hard work by teachers such as Mr. Adams and Ms. Zamora.”
