Coach's Comments
I can't recall too many times when we played a game against (then 4A) a 6A school in their gym when the pressure of expectations weighed so heavily on us. Throughout the first half we witnessed that as Baldwin took a 30 - 24 lead into half. The Baldwin team had been well prepared, playing a strategy that we believe we will see more of this season, and they hit some tough shots and played smart basketball. We looked out of sorts at times as we are still in the process of finding ourselves this early in the season.
Our coaches are most pleased with how the team responded at halftime. There was no finger pointing, instead we rallied around each other and responded by outscoring Baldwin by 13 in the second half to post a "gritty" victory. The old saying is that you learn about yourself when faced with adversity, and tonight we learned a lot. We are proud of the toughness we showed, the confidence we had in shooting the ball, and the positive and supportive emotions everyone on our squad displayed in that second half!
Justin led us in scoring with 20 points, but, more importantly, his was the motor that kept us running during our toughest moments. We are fortunate to have a number of outstanding leaders on this team, and tonight Justin inspired us. The irony is that we shot better tonight than last night when we scored 81 points, 50% from 2 pt shots and 57% on 8 of 14 from 3 pt shots. Isaiah 13 points on 5 for 5 shooting and Nate 12 points on 3 - 3 from the 3 point line also scored in double figures.
Another enjoyable aspect of the evening was watching the JV Black hustling all over the floor in route to a nice victory over Baldwin's JV team. Our final score was the first time we have scored in the 70's for a JV team in quite a while.
