Latino Culture Club Supports Artisans

The Latino Culture Club at SA supported Central American artisans through the Pulsera Project. Through the recommendation of their faculty advisor, Ms. Villalobos, seniors Daniel Torres and Lucas Mendonca volunteered to sell the wares of the organization on SA’s campus, January 13 - 28, with all proceeds being returned to the group and its artisans. Goods include pulseras (Spanish for bracelets) and bolsitas (bags) for $7 and $15 respectively. With tables set up outside of the Middle/Senior school cafeteria and in the Senior School Commons, classmates lined up to make purchases and donations. Sales were also conducted in the Lower School and during the school’s Taste of SA event.
Daniel and Lucas created an informative and photographic display to accompany their sales table. Featuring some of the artists and their work, the display explains:

“The Pulsera Project began in 2009 when a group of friends traveling in Central America discovered a community of artisans in the foothills of Nicaragua. The artists were masters of weaving colorful pulseras but had little market to sell them in their country….The Pulsera Project now employs nearly 200 artists in Nicaragua and Guatemala with Fair Trade jobs, while sharing the vibrant art and uplifting energy of Central American culture with thousands of students in schools across the U.S. Pulsera sales fund scholarships, secondary education, healthcare, sustainable energy, workers’ rights, and other programs.”

Congratulations to Daniel, Lucas, and the entire Latino Culture Club for using their resources to support a worthwhile cause and increase awareness of Central American culture among their peers and the SA community. Through sales and donations, the total raised for the Pulsera Project was nearly $2,000!
