SA Students Share Knowledge of Dr. King
While Sewickley Academy was closed on Monday, January 16, 2023, in recognition of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the students spent significant time discussing Dr. King’s contributions to the Civil Rights Movement and our country.
In particular, several activities occurred throughout the Lower School leading up to the federal holiday. The students:
- read biographies of Martin Luther King, Jr.
- learned about other important individuals in the Civil Rights Movement, including Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridges, and Jackie Robinson.
- were inspired by Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech to write their own dreams for the future. Other students picked the line/section of the speech that they most related to or felt impacted by and drew a picture based on the section.
- created posters on what LOVE means, as inspired by Dr. King’s quote, “I have decided to stick with Love."
- selected impactful words from Dr. King's speeches (such as love, peace, equality) and created a word cloud to display in the hallway outside their classroom
- designed mock Instagram posts that perhaps Dr. King would post today to spread his messages to the world.
The students in Grade 2 who wrote of their own dreams, shared their thoughts on stage in their “Hooray for the USA” assembly for classmates, faculty, staff, and families.
