Juneteenth 2022

Dear Sewickley Academy Community,

Today, we recognize and celebrate Juneteenth. Though the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, it wasn’t until this date in 1865 that federal troops arrived in Texas to ensure that the state’s 250,000 enslaved people were freed.

One of our Grade 11 students prepared a presentation for her peers this past spring on Juneteenth because she felt it required more recognition. Having only become familiar with the holiday a few years ago herself, she discussed the history, its importance in today’s world, and how her family and others celebrate annually. If you would like to learn more about Juneteenth, two helpful websites are: The History Channel and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Sewickley Academy celebrates all of our Black and African American students, faculty, staff, and families, as well as the historical significance and magnitude of this day. We are committed to supporting an inclusive community that welcomes and encourages everyone to be their authentic selves. Let us all take some time today to reflect on the importance of resiliency, determination, and independence.
