Two Sophomores Received National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

On March 13, the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers announced the winners for the national Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Sophomores Aysu Türkay and Anthony Wiles won a Gold Key and Silver Key respectively.

Aysu received a Gold Key for her critical essay, “Make Room for Comics,” and Anthony earned a Silver Key for his poem, "Chitlins' and Hair Grease." Both submitted their original work to multiple writing award categories for the regional competition and advanced to the national round.

The students felt honored for the recognition. “Winning a gold medal for “Make Room for Comics” was a pleasant surprise. I was not expecting to win anything, and receiving a gold medal is a huge honor for me,” Aysu said. “I am grateful for winning the Silver Key and being able to share my work with Scholastic. I look forward to participating again next year! Also, I would like to thank my family and my teachers, especially Mrs. Russell, Dr. Wolfe, Ms. Golden, and Ms. Barry who encouraged and supported me this year and last year,” Anthony stated.

Each year, according to the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, the Alliance collaborates with more than 100 visual arts and literary arts organizations across the country to bring the Scholastic Awards to local communities. Teens in grades 7–12 apply in 29 categories of art and writing.

Congratulations, Aysu and Anthony!
