Science Bowl Team Places Second at the Western Pennsylvania Regional Science Bowl

The competition, sponsored by the National Energy Technology Laboratory, consisted of nine rounds per divisions. Students from 40 high schools answered questions covering an assortment of scientific and energy topics. “We were in the Apple division facing teams such as Fox Chapel, North Allegheny Intermediate, and Plum, and ended up undefeated in the division. Then the top teams of each division came together in the finals and competed to determine the top four slots,” Aditya explained. “We first competed against Upper Saint Clair, which was a very close match that we won. Once we were confirmed in the 1st-2nd slot, we faced North Allegheny Senior, last year’s regional winner.” After a riveting match, SA’s team lost by a razor-thin margin.

During preparations, the team read up about astronomy, biology, chemistry, earth science, and physics. They truly enjoy science. “What I have enjoyed the most about science is the fact that it is around us 24/7, as it is a subject that never stops growing. I have always been a naturally curious individual, and science gives me reasoning to the ‘why’ or ‘how’ aspect of something. As a result, it has always been a subject of fulfillment and discovery, which enthralls me on many different levels,” Aditya said.

The Science Bowl Club was formed last year by Pranav Mulgund ’18 and continues gaining momentum thanks to the leadership of Prateek and the guidance of Senior School science teacher Dr. Ron Kinser and science and robotics teacher Mr. Ben Spicer. “This year Prateek, was vital to our success, due to the amount of ambition that he had in building this team upward,” Aditya said. The team met weekly after school with the intent of going all the way to nationals and received a $750 cash prize for the Academy in the regional competition.
