Coach's Comments
An amazing day with roller coaster moments for all of our golfers including the most amazing finish as the Panthers captured the gold by winning the State Championship by one stroke! After our first 9 holes of play (a shotgun start that began on holes on the back nine) we were 15 strokes behind due to some unusually high scores on holes that included triple bogeys by 4 of our 5 golfers. Junior Tim Fitzgerald was our anchor through nine holes with a score of 2 over par in the windy conditions.
The other four golfers accomplished something that is very difficult in the middle of a round of golf. They switched gears, ignoring previous mistakes and played as champions. Even though we trailed by 10 strokes with 6 holes to play, we were attacking the golf course and not thinking about the other teams and their scores.
Tim was able to keep his fine play resulting in a final score of 79! Freshman Joey Mucci played his final 10 holes 2 over par to shoot 81! Senior Zoe Luther played her final 10 holes of her career 3 over par to shoot 84! Junior Navin Rana played the final 8 holes 1 over par to shoot 83! Senior JF Aber played the final 8 holes of his career 1 under par to shoot 77!
Even with than gutsy, incredible finish, we weren't sure if it was enough as we waited in the clubhouse for over a half an hour for the final scores to be posted. At one point, we believed that we lost by one stroke, then believed we were in a playoff, then were informed that we were champions by one stroke.
Our section, WPIAL and PIAA Championships symbolize the hard work, comradery, friendships, talent and commitment our team made this year! Take the lessons learned by what can be accomplished when you go all in for something and apply in the future, and you will continue to be a champion in life!
