Two Grade 8 Students Honored with John W. Heagy Award

Head of Middle School Dr. Shannon Mulholland presented Olivia and Daniel with the John W. Heagy Award during the Grade 8 Commencement on June 6, 2019.

The John W. Heagy Award has been given annually since 1994. Mr. Heagy was the much-respected Head of Middle School from 1963 to 1988. He was nicknamed “the bear” and was considered to be a grizzly bear if you got in trouble, or a teddy bear if you needed help. His leadership was characterized by wisdom, dedication, and integrity. This award, in his memory, is given annually to the students who have made the greatest contribution to Sewickley Academy during the previous year.

"This year’s first recipient demonstrates kindness, a high level of personal responsibility, and above all humility," Dr. Mulholland said of Olivia. "Your brand of leadership is being a model for others, and I want you to know that while you didn’t set out to get attention, your contributions this year have been noticed. For your strength when others wanted to fold, for your diligence in the classroom, for your encouragement of your peers, for celebrating the successes of others as much as your own, we thank you. It is my pleasure, on behalf of the Sewickley Academy Middle School faculty, to present the Heagy Award to Olivia Jackson."

"Mr. Heagy would recognize in our next student empowerment that many adolescents admire but few possess. Our recipient is empowered to support our community and communities around the world when they are in need and empowered to have a voice," Dr. Mulholland said of Daniel. "For all that you have done, and for all the empowerment that you have modeled throughout your time in Middle School, we are proud to give you this recognition. It is my pleasure, on behalf of the Sewickley Academy Middle School faculty, to award you, Daniel Torres, the Heagy Cup."

Congratulations, Olivia and Daniel!
