Two Seniors Receive William P. Mahoney B Kind Foundation Scholarship

By: LaVern Burton, Director of Equity, Inclusion, and Service Learning

Lekha Amin and Zoya Mahmood are two recipients of the 2019 William P. Mahoney B kind Foundation Scholarship Award. The B kind Foundation generously, privately, and unexpectedly awards nominees $2,500 for their efforts to build community through acts of kindness.

Both Lekha and Zoya are known for the thoughtful ways in which they build community through noticing the needs of their peers and teachers. Ishika Saxena, President of the B kind Club, shared, “Lekha is a caring person who recognizes everyone's potential while consistently incorporating compassion and empathy in her daily life. She lives by the ideal that kindness is never a chore but something that one must keep in the center of their life. She consistently offered her time across all divisions and campus activities, and effectively worked with students in the Lower School to share the message of the importance of being inclusive and kind.”

“Zoya sees the power in small acts of kindness and is always willing to lend a helping hand,” Ishika said. “She was instrumental in creating the World Kindness video and consistently appeared at school assemblies and conferences sharing the power of kindness with her peers and wider audiences. She values the power and impact of empathy and effortlessly exemplifies it in every way.”

The B kind Club at Sewickley Academy is part of a greater club initiative started at the St. Luke's School in New Canaan, Connecticut, which our students have actively participated in for the past five years. Inspired by the legendary kindness and generosity of the late William P. Mahoney, B kind’s mission is to spread kindness and elevate kind deeds.

Congratulations, Lekha and Zoya!
