Senior Awarded a National Merit Scholarship

Aydin Turkay has been selected as a winner of a $2,500 National Merit Scholarship.

The 2,500 winners of the $2,500 National Merit Scholarship this year were chosen from a pool of over 15,000 outstanding finalists.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the winners earlier this week. According to the press release, “National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners are the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.” Recipients may use the single-payment award at any regionally accredited college or university in the United States.

From the more than 1.6 million junior students who entered the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program, approximately 16,000 were named semifinalists. They were designated on a state representational basis, in proportion to each state’s percentage of the national total of graduating high school seniors. In order to advance in the competition and be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, a semifinalist had to become a finalist by fulfilling several requirements that included submitting a detailed scholarship application and presenting a record of very high academic performance. The approximately 7,600 Merit Scholars were chosen from the group of approximately 15,000 distinguished finalists.

Congratulations, Aydin!
