Senior School Students Compete in Science Bowl

Sewickley Academy’s Science Bowl team competed in the Western Pennsylvania Science Bowl on Saturday, February 23, at the Community College of Allegheny County’s South Campus, tying with Shady Side Academy for first place in the Natural Gas division.

Senior Jim Wang and sophomores Prateek Adurty, Jiaji Wang, Aditya Menon, and Joshua Kurian represented Sewickley Academy at the competition under the instruction of Dr. Susan Zawacky and Mr. Ben Spicer.

The competition, which is sponsored by the National Energy Technology Laboratory, consists of four divisions – coal, oil, natural gas, and geothermal – and is limited to 40 teams. Schools from the following counties may participate: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Cambria, Clarion, Crawford, Erie, Fayette, Forest, Greene, Indiana, Jefferson, Lawrence, Mercer, Somerset, Venango, Washington, and Westmoreland.

The Science Bowl Club was formed last year by Pranav Mulgund ’18 and gained momentum this year thanks to leadership from Prateek and Jim. The Academy won eight of nine rounds, with the match against Mt. Lebanon being decided in favor of SA only after Jiaji challenged the room judge’s ruling when his answer to the final question was ruled incorrect. There is a set procedure for a student to challenge a judge’s ruling.  Mr. Spicer knew Jiaji's answer to a physics question was correct, and ably supported the challenge, which was upheld on appeal to a higher authority.

Congratulations on a successful Science Bowl!
