What motivated you to become a teacher?

The chance to show students that learning can be fun and that knowledge obtained can be life changing.

What are your favorite moments with a student?

I love the moments when learning shifts from being a chore to a joy.  I enjoy hearing things from students like, “This is actually fun!” It makes me happy to play a positive role in a student’s perspective on education.

What is the most important life lesson you want your students to learn in your class?

That hard work always produces positive results, and that everyone is capable of learning at a high level.

How do you keep current with the subject areas you cover?

I still keep up with literature from my graduate studies.  Good habits are hard to break, so I still visit sites like Pubmed or the journals Scienceand Nature to see what is being published.  I also enjoy reading science articles in the news because the authors do a good job of explaining science to the general public, which helps me with my teaching.

If you were stranded on a deserted island with just one thing, what would it be?

A copy of “Arrowsmith” by Sinclair Lewis.
