Grade 5 Teacher Chris Carney
Years at the Academy: 8
Degrees: B.A., Seton Hill University; M.S., Ed., Duquesne University
What motivated you to become a teacher?
As a communications major in college, I was working on putting together a Kids Say the Darndest Things video for class. I decided to volunteer in a pre-school classroom for two weeks so I could build a relationship with the kids I planned to interview. After the two weeks, I couldn’t stop going back to spend time with the kids – I loved being with them. As soon as I graduated with a communications degree, I re-enrolled for my teaching certification.
Why did you choose to teach at Sewickley Academy?
Teaching at Sewickley Academy allows me the freedom to be creative and innovative in my teaching – if I want to try something different, I can. I’m not just teaching to a test, I am able to engage my students’ minds.
What do you want your students to gain from having known you?
I want them to learn credibility – to understand that their thinking must be credible and believable. I also want them to realize that life doesn’t always have to be serious and stoic and that they can be creative and silly without losing credibility.
What do you enjoy most about teaching?
The exchange between my students and me. Also, I love teaching fifth graders because they are old enough to be humorous effectively, yet young enough that “magic” still exists in their worlds.
What are some of your interests/hobbies?
Music – I play the bass and sing. I'm in my church choir. Also, I’m a huge fan of all Pittsburgh sports.
