Advisory Program

Each full-time faculty member at Sewickley Academy serves as an advisor to a small number of students. The Advisory Program is not only one of the most important channels of communication between the school and parents, but it is also the primary support system for each student at the school. Advisors guide their advisees throughout their academic career and serve as a resource for personal issues as well. They communicate with advisees' parents and serve as principal advocates for each advisee in any formal contact with teachers and administration.

The advisor serves as the overall academic advisor and is knowledgeable about Sewickley Academy's graduation requirements and the courses that each advisee should take to progress successfully to graduation. The advisor supervises the advisee's course selections in consultation with the College Guidance office for Grades 10-12 and also keeps up with all relevant non-academic issues.

The advisor cultivates an advocacy relationship with the advisee and serves as a general mentor. This means being knowledgeable about each advisee's interests, extracurricular activities, and out-of-school activities (sports, jobs, volunteer commitments, etc.).

Advisors contact parents at the beginning of the school year to establish (or re-establish) a line of communication and to reinforce the advisor's role as the primary point of contact for concerns the parents may have throughout the year. Meetings with parents are scheduled if academic or other concerns arise, usually with the advisor, grade coordinator, and Senior School Office. There is also a set conference day in the second trimester with advisors, students, and parents.
