Constructive, regularly-assigned homework helps reinforce classroom work for students and allows them to practice and master skills in a variety of subjects. Homework must not be considered "busy work" done at home but rather an essential learning pursuit that will increase in complexity as the student progresses through the grades.

Homework is tailored to students' needs and capacities and will not be unreasonable in amount. Parents can aid in their children's education by creating a positive homework environment, one that encourages the child to do his/her homework while maintaining a positive attitude. When homework is not assigned, parents should encourage their children to use the established study time as a recreational reading period.

Homework is usually of the following nature:
  • Drills and additional practice to strengthen new skills and clarify concepts taught in the classroom
  • Completion of unfinished classroom assignments
  • Work on projects of a short-term or long-term nature
  • Research skills activities (e.g., locating facts and data)
  • Independent reading for pleasure and enjoyment
On school nights, homework is approximately 10 minutes per grade level per night:
  • Grade 1 = 10 minutes
  • Grade 2 = 20 minutes
  • Grade 3 = 30 minutes
  • Grade 4 = 40 minutes
  • Grade 5 = 50 minutes
Many assignments are given well in advance and students are expected to plan accordingly.

Students are expected to take their homework responsibilities seriously. Grades 1-5 are provided with an assignment book, which is to be kept up-to-date by the student and monitored at home by the parent. Parents should consult the child's teacher on his/her policy concerning homework.
