Student Support

Cross Age Tutoring Program (CAT)

A CAT (Cross Age Tutor) is a student in a higher grade level who tutors younger students. At Sewickley Academy, Senior School students help Middle School and Grade 9 students achieve greater academic success. Research has shown that high school age tutors are better than adults in relating to their tutees on a cognitive, emotional, and social level. Student tutors benefit in many ways, including the opportunity to review material and improve their own communication and organizational skills. CATS will be trained prior to working with students. Tutoring sessions will be scheduled before school, during study halls and free periods, and after school.

Hear to Help

In the Senior School, a network called Hear to Help, a non-disciplinary support group, is available to students, faculty members, and parents who wish to express a concern or seek help regarding a student's emotional or physical health in the areas of drugs, alcohol, eating disorders, or depression. Members of the team have been trained by professionals at St. Francis Medical Center. The team can receive referrals from any member of the Sewickley Academy community. All referrals are strictly confidential. The Hear to Help team is coordinated by School Counselor Lynn Sanborne, MSW.

Peer Counselors

Peer Counselors make up a group of selected juniors and seniors who represent the different interests and activities of Senior School life. Peer Counselors are expected to be friendly, inclusive, respectful, and good listeners. They encourage freshmen and new students to participate in sports and other activities and to fully engage in the life of the school so that transition into the Senior School is an easy one for these students. Peer Counselors contact these students over the summer and serve as role models and good listeners during the year to help with any problems or concerns. Three Peer Counselors are assigned to each freshman homeroom and meet with them during the homeroom period two Mondays a month throughout the year. Before school begins, the Peer Counselors visit freshmen at Linsly Outdoor Center to introduce themselves and answer any questions. Peer Counselors also serve as a resource for Hear to Help to refer students who may need more support.
