Grade 3 Students Present “Who Am I?” Books

By: Holly Hilberg, Lower School Science Teacher

Grade 3 students presented their books entitled, “Who Am I?” to parents, faculty, and administration Thursday morning.

The students worked diligently in several of their classes to create this long-term integrated project: an informational book about one North American animal. The project evolved after students learned note-taking and research skills during science class. The young researchers consulted two sources and practiced recording animal characteristics, behaviors, and adaptations.

Students then acted as scientific illustrators, depicting their animal in the appropriate ecosystem, and synthesized their research findings into two types of writing pieces during Language Arts classes –an acrostic poem, which describes the animal, and an informational paragraph containing facts.

In their Spanish class, students learned Spanish terms for animal body parts and created two pages for their books under the direction of their Spanish teacher. Three beautiful pages were created during art class, illustrating clues about each animal. In library class, students learned how to locate books in the library, cite sources, and create a bibliography page.

Newly added components this year include a dedication page and a glossary page to document science vocabulary learned during the Animal Studies Unit. Completing an "About the Author Page" and adding a cursive signature on the title page were the final steps of the publication process.

Congratulations Grade 3 authors! We are all proud of you!
