Elliot Mancos

Math Olympiad
Grade: 5
Started with SA in: Grade 1
Future plans: “I don’t know yet. I enjoy math, science, robotics, reading, and art, so hopefully I can find something that combines all of those.”
Role model: “My cousin, Collin. He’s in college. He’s smart and really chill. Being smart can get you far in life, I think, and it’s just cool that he can stay calm all the time.”
Favorite thing about SA: “It’s a really collaborative community. We get to work with and help the younger students with robotics and lots of other things.”
Spotlight: In Grade 5, SA students have the option to participate in an enrichment program known as Math Olympiad that involves 25 sections of five questions each. Elliott is the first SA student to ever complete it in its entirety, and he finished it in March! He decided he was up for the challenge and did so using mostly his personal time, but also when he had free-time in class. “It was mostly word problems that got harder as I went along,” Elliott said. “Some of them got really hard and tricky – you really had to read the problem closely and carefully.” According to Elliott, he has always been interested in math. “There is always something different and there are multiple ways to solve problems.” He started his experience at SA with Mrs. Heavner, whom he said, “was always cheery and made learning fun.” And now in Mr. Carney’s class, Elliott noted that, “he always makes it funny and more engaging.” Having completed the Math Olympiad, Elliott has continued to challenge himself in math by finding pre-Algebra and Algebra worksheets online to complete on his own time.
