Grade 5 Student Wins Lower School Community of Respect Award

During the final Lower School assembly of the school year, Head of Lower School Dr. Cricket Mikheev announced Rinnie Jardini as this year’s winner of the Community of Respect Award.

In keeping with tradition, previous awardees shared what the award meant to them. Alex Gordon, who won four years ago, went first followed by Will Stevenson, winner from three years ago. Will talked about the meaning of respect, “to be kind, generous, and selfless to others.” Dimitri Gary, who also won three years ago, said the winner should always think about, “do[ing] the next right thing.” Kipauno Washington, who won in 2014, spoke of the Academy being inclusive, open minded, and respectful.  Last year’s awardee Sean Donohue said, “our [students and faculty’s] respect for others distinguishes us from other schools.”

With help from Grade 5 teachers Chris Carney, Carol McCormish, and Christina Blazin, Dr. Mikheev shared the following as she announced the awardee.

There are so many students in Grade 5 who exhibit qualities that should be recognized and applauded. It was difficult to pinpoint one individual who espouses these traits.  Every one of the fine, young ten and eleven year olds that sit in the front, center of Rea contribute to a wonderful tapestry of friendship, acceptance, camaraderie, and respect. Truly, the entire Grade 5 class - all 50 individuals - make their teachers and parents proud and give the younger students a whole crew of role models to look up to and emulate.

However, as the year progressed, the Grade 5 teachers and faculty began to notice that one young person consistently...and increasingly…displayed the characteristics that make him -- or her -- so unique.

This student is a terrific friend to all. Whether involved in a gregarious game at recess, immersed in a group project for class, or just hanging out, this young person welcomes all, excludes none, and is truly genuine in all interactions.

This individual looks at the world with bright, eager eyes... sizing-up the possibilities, rather than locating obstacles; able to balance serious work with whimsical silliness. Knows, instinctively, when it’s time to get down to business and when it’s appropriate to let loose; embraces each new experience with curiosity and enthusiasm. Constantly has a smile. Greets others with kind words and a welcoming smile; non-judgmental. Steps up and acknowledges those on the outside of the circle. Makes others feel included.

This young lady is truly concerned with the essence of the individual; what is inside of people... much like the tasty fillings that can be found at the center of her favorite food... pierogies. It is my pleasure to recognize this year’s [2016] recipient of the Community of Respect Award… Rinnie Jardini!

Rinnie is an exceptionally mature, thoughtful, and responsible person. For those reasons, she is an outstanding learner and friend.

Congratulations Rinnie!
