Ephemera Students Participate in Off-Beat!
Ruth Neely, Sewickley Academy Librarian
On Friday, April 22, a collaboration between the students of Sewickley Academy's Ephemera, the students of Quaker Valley’s literary magazine, Bittersweet, and the Sewickley Area librarians resulted in an open mic event titled Off-Beat! at the Sewickley Public Library.
Dylan, student president of Ephemera, worked with other students, Sewickley Academy librarian Ms. Neely and Senior School French teacher Mrs. Schmidt to create this first of its kind event. Amongst displays of student artwork, Middle School and Senior School students had the opportunity to share their written word and music with peers. Cookies and coffee created a cafe like atmosphere and students enjoyed other planned activities such as creating “found poems” made from already famous lines of poetry, adding to a continuous, collective poem, and wrapped up the night by participating in a few quick rounds of an improv game.
The night was a great success, highlighting the value of collaboration between Sewickley Academy, Quaker Valley, and the area library programs as well as the exceptional talent of our students. Student leadership from both schools intend on making the event even bigger and better next year!
