SA Senior Sophia Carlson Commits to Penn
Sewickley Academy senior Sophia Carlson verbally committed to the University of Pennsylvania women’s rowing team in October.
“Giving an early verbal commitment was the driving force of the past year of my rowing career,” Sophia said. “I knew that being able to go through the college process with a little extra assurance would make up for a lot of the adversity that I've faced.”
A varsity captain of her nationally-competitive club team, Three Rivers Junior Rowing team, Sophia chose Penn after also considering Cornell University and the University of Southern California.
“Penn embodies the student-athlete atmosphere that I was looking for while going through the recruiting process,” Sophia said. “In addition to being geographically appealing, Philadelphia is a great city that I'm looking forward to spending the next four years in.”
Last month, Sophia was in the second seat of a women's youth four that placed seventh of 85 entries at the Head of the Charles Regatta, the world's largest two-day rowing event, in Cambridge, Mass.
She competed in the junior eight event at Club Nationals with the United States Junior National Team where they took second place in July. Her team claimed first place at the Head of Ohio event on October 3.
Sophia said she plans to major in political science, and is considering pre-law.
