Junior Jason Li Achieves WPIAL Golf Title
Junior Jason Li, the reigning PIAA champion, won the WPIAL Class AA golf championship Thursday, October 1 at Allegheny Country Club.
After a rocky start, Li, who was 3-over-par through five holes, birdied No. 2, 6, and 10 to win his first WPIAL title. “I got off to a rough start,” Li said. “I was getting a little bit nervous, but in the back of my mind I was confident that I could pull out, and I think the mindset coming in to today was 18 pars – that’s really all you needed to move on and that’s the key here.”
As one of five SA students to compete on Thursday, Li shot 2-over 72. With the win, he advanced to the PIAA West Regional on October 19 at Chestnut Ridge’s Tom’s Run Course in Blairsville. Seniors Adam Snyder and Scott Brown and junior Declan Hickton will join Li at the PIAA West Regional.
The teammates are supportive of each other, even though they are competitive. “Every single one of us knows we all want to beat each other, we always want to come out on top,” Li said. “But, when we see each other on the course, we’re saying ‘Hi, how’s it going?’ and ‘Stick with it.’”
