SA Junior Spends Summer in Spain
Junior Kelcey Flowers will be spending four weeks in Spain thanks to the Global Travel Scholarship Program.
Junior Kelsey Flowers is thrilled to be spending four weeks this summer studying language and culture in Spain thanks to the Global Travel Scholarship Program. She will be staying in Granada, but plans on traveling to Madrid and Guadix for language training and to visit tourist attractions. Spain’s rich culture, beautiful scenery, and friendly population of people will surely leave its mark on Flowers as she spends the summer diving into it all. Flowers says she has a strong interest in politics and foreign affairs, and is looking forward to immersing herself into the Spanish language during her time abroad.
The Global Travel Scholarship is funded by the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh and is focused on recruiting mature, enthusiastic, and passionate high school students. These students are nominated by their teachers and mentors who believe they have what it takes to make the most out of this incredible opportunity. The scholarship covers not only the full cost of the abroad program, but also airfare, passport, and visa fees.
Flowers will live with a host family in Granada, which most students, although intimidated at first, say is the most enriching experience of all. Most host families, especially in Spain, speak little to no English. For students like Flowers who has a goal of immersing herself into the language, this is the best way to do it. Many students say that they learn more about a language just by living with their host family than they do inside the classroom. Apart from this, Flowers will also have the opportunity through her program to participate in community service activities, language training, regional exploration, and more.
