Gold Award Project Benefits Local Park and Students

SA student wins prestigious Gold Award for her work in North Park.

Sewickley Academy freshman Chelsea Carver earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, which represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouting by creating five demonstration gardens for Allegheny County at the entrance to Marshall Lake, in North Park. The gardens include butterfly/hummingbird, pollinator, deer resistant, drought resistant, and edible perennial plants.

This prestigious award challenges girls to change the world— by solving a community problem—that will leave a lasting impact for years to come. Girl Scout Chelsea Carver began work on the gardens in 2014 and has overseen hundreds of volunteer hours and over $1,000 in donations from sponsors such as Phipps Conservatory, to create the gardens. She will see the fruit of her labor flourish in the coming months. The gardens will be used by the North Park Naturalists for educational purposes. Chelsea said, “Making a difference in North Park is a lasting and rewarding experience.”

Beginning on May 9, garden classes will be offered to the public throughout the spring and summer. For more information and to access the class schedules visit the Latodami Nature Center portal.

Chelsea is also the recipient of the Girls Scouts Silver Award. Interpretive Naturalist Meg Scanlon served as Chelsea’s advisor on both projects completed at North Park.
