The sound of shoes squeaking on a newly finished gym floor marks an exciting time at Sewickley Academy. We know that basketball season has officially begun. The start of a new season brings a feeling of excitement that is like no other. We know that there is a long season ahead. The basketball season stretches from the middle of November through February and hopefully into March. We have rested our minds and bodies from past seasons and are ready to set out on an adventure.
We strive to have each player understand the basic concepts of the game. Not only is movement important; movement with a purpose is essential to success. Players will know a play from every position on the floor so as to understand the basic concept of the play.
We focus on the defensive aspect of the game. We use our athleticism and instinct to pressure teams as they bring the ball up the floor. Once the ball is over half court, our goal is to force a team to take a bad shot. We will go hard after the rebound so as to not let the team get a second shot. Our goal will be to out-rebound our opponent on the defensive end.
Wins and losses are not as simple as one team scoring more points than the other. It is determined when an athlete and coaching staff ask themselves, "Did I give everything I possibly could physically, mentally, and emotionally?" If the answer is "yes", then we are winners. If the answer is no, it is up to the individual to make the changes necessary to enable them to give it everything next time. We are ready for the challenge and are excited to begin our adventure!
