The Sewickley Academy Middle School focuses on each child by creating a caring and understanding space to encourage physical growth, social/emotional maturity, and abstract thinking. Middle school years mark the transition from the dependence of childhood and the independence of young adulthood.
Sewickley Academy is just such an open community. It's so easy to get into, even for new kids. We get a lot of freedom here at the middle school. It's like one big family. Because you know the teachers and they're always there to help you. And all the students are friends and there's just a big community feeling. Being at SA is really great, because there are a lot of really nice people to hang out with so you're never really by yourself. I like Sewickley Academy because of the size. Because you can get a lot of one-on-one help with the teachers academic-wise and sports-wise. The teachers are amazing. It's nice because of the student to teacher ratio. You get a lot of personal time with the teachers. Well, there's not a lot of kids in most of my classes. So we get more attention than most public schools. The community's special because everybody respects you here. Everybody knows you. You have the responsibility to go to classes on time. I also like the schedule, how we only have three classes a day. And they're longer classes, so we have enough time to actually get through things. Instead of a 45-minute class where you just start doing something where you have to end. The teachers give you a lot more support. I think all the teachers give a lot of extra help. Like after school one-on-one with everyone. They support you and help whenever you need it. The athletics program is great. They have teams for baseball, lacrosse, basketball, soccer, field hockey-- any sport you would really want to do. Then the athletics are great because of the coaches, and your teammates are really great. And I really like playing with a team because you really get to know everybody. And you all play together, and you have fun on bus rides, and the games always go well. And it's a lot of fun. I like arts at Sewickley Academy because there are so many different choices. If you like painting, or if you like acting or singing, and there's a bunch of variety in the arts department. My old school didn't really have that many things we could do. We just had maybe one or two little sports, nothing much. And then when I came here, there's a lot more options. I like Sewickley because all the teachers are friendly and you get to meet new people and they're really friendly, too. It's a really kind community, so there's no cliques with people. They're all just one big family which I really like. I also love my friends here because they're true friends and honest. Sometimes if we have our basketball games or our soccer games, we'll all attend. We have a pack in the stands and we all cheer for them basically. Clubs-- I think they're really cool because you get to come up with the ideas for them. So if you have a certain interest you get to make a club and other people can join. You can meet other people through them. I'm in the ice cream club. And it's really fun because we sell ice cream. And we're doing it for a good cause because we're getting it for a family to get a goat so they can feed their whole village. Activities are always together and you kind of get to know everybody. Every grade, we're all one big community. And we're all friends and get along together. It's such an awesome environment for a student.
In the Middle School, students experience greater freedom and expanded options in an environment that is structured but flexible, where expectations are clearly set forth. Responsible citizenship is stressed, requiring respect for the feelings, opinions, and property of others and for the valued traditions of the school.
Wisdom and dedication coupled with an understanding of the unique social and emotional needs of pre-adolescents characterize our Middle School faculty. Teachers combine expertise, energy, empathy, guidance and a love of learning, often with a zany sense of humor, to teach Middle School students effectively.
