All grades are located on a single 16-acre campus, with an additional 14 acres
nearby containing athletic fields and tennis courts. A $15 million construction
project, completed in 1999, brought dramatic changes to the appearance of the
campus. New additions include a freestanding Middle School, library for grades
6-12, and separate early childhood center and play area. Extensive renovations were
made to the Senior School and Lower School buildings. Facilities now include
60 classrooms, four computer labs, nine science labs, two greenhouses, a media
center, two libraries with a total of 33,600 volumes, and two student publishing
centers. Visual and performing arts programs are supported by studios for painting,
printmaking, ceramics and 3-dimensional art, a photographic darkroom, dance,
vocal, and instrumental music studios, music practice rooms, the Gregg Family
Theater with seating for approximately 150, Rea Auditorium with 635 seats, and
the Campbell Art Gallery.
Two gymnasiums, four athletic fields, a fully-equipped fitness center, and
five tennis courts support varsity teams in soccer, tennis, field hockey, cross
country, golf, basketball, ice hockey, lacrosse, softball, baseball, swimming,
and track & field.
Small classes, averaging 14-16 students, assure individual attention for each
child. The student to teacher ratio is approximately 9:1.
Virtually 100 percent of graduates continue their education at a four-year
college or university.
A strong financial aid program supports the Academy's commitment to enrolling outstanding students regardless of their ability to pay. Approximately 20 percent of students receive financial
aid.
Students and Families
Sewickley Academy students come from more than 50 school districts throughout
Allegheny, Beaver, and Butler counties, as well as eastern Ohio and northern
West Virginia. Van and bus transportation is available to many areas. The
dynamic mix of students representing different backgrounds and life experiences
is one of the school's greatest strengths. Approximately 19 percent of the student body is Asian and East Indian, Latin, or African American (9 percent).
Each year, the school hosts several foreign exchange students who reside with
Sewickley Academy families and attend Senior School. In recent years, they
have come to us from Spain, Italy, Germany, Finland, Russia, Bosnia, Brazil,
Australia, and China.
Parents are also a vital force within the Sewickley Academy community. Many
volunteer their time and take an active role in their children's school lives.
The Home and School Association, to which parents of all enrolled students
belong, maintains a close partnership with the administration.
Approximately 3700 alumni are represented by the Alumni Council, which meets regularly to plan and help carry out events that are designed to engage graduates in the continuing advancement of Sewickley Academy.
Teachers are Our Strength
Dedicated and energetic teachers are key to the quality education for which
Sewickley Academy is known and respected. Our staff numbers over 90 professional
educators, approximately one-third of whom hold masters and doctoral degrees
in their field of expertise. They are caring individuals dedicated to their
students' intellectual growth as well as their emotional and social development.
Many can be found after school hours giving extra help with academics, coaching
athletic teams or offering encouragement from the bleachers. They are counselors,
advisors and role models.
